Indonesia's president: no need to panic over stock market drop

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Friday there was no need to panic over a sharp drop in the local stock market, saying the country was better prepared than in 2008 to face any potential global crisis.

The stock market index fell more than 6 percent at one point on Friday amid a global sell-off sparked by concerns over the euro zone's debt crisis and fears that the U.S. economy could slide back into a recession.

Indonesia President Assures Economy In Better Shape Than 200

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Friday that the domestic economy is better prepared to weather the risks of a potential global slowdown than it had been in 2008.

The president's comment follows those of other senior Indonesian officials aimed at calming the market after fears of a possible global double-dip recession fueled risk aversion, hurting the country's stock market and currency.

The Jakarta Composite Index, Indonesia's main stock index, was down 4.4% at 0818 GMT, off its intraday low. The rupiah declined, with the dollar trading at IDR8,550, up from IDR8,505 late Thursday. Traders suspected Bank Indonesia to have sold around $50 million to halt the rupiah's slide.

"We managed to minimize the impact of the 2008 global economic crisis...(Although) we hope what's happening in the U.S. and Europe do not lead to another crisis, it is our responsibility to anticipate and prepare ourselves, " Yudhoyono said.

"No need to panic as our current conditions are better than 2008," the president added.
Indonesia's economic growth slowed in 2009 due to the global economic crisis, but the country still managed to expand 4.5% thanks to its vast domestic market and relatively strong banking system.

Bank Indonesia Research Director Perry Warjiyo earlier in the day underlined that the country's foreign exchange reserves, the country's first line of defence against currency speculators, stood at $122.67 billion at the end of July, compared with $51.64 billion at the end of 2008. Indonesia's GDP Tops Forecast

Indonesia's economic expansion accelerated in the second quarter, beating analyst expectations as investment and export growth lifted the country's output.

Analysts say the robust figures suggest full-year growth may exceed the government's target of 6.5% despite the fear of a possible global slowdown that has pummeled investor sentiment.

Indonesia's gross domestic product grew 6.49% in the second quarter from a year earlier, accelerating slightly from 6.47% in the first quarter, the official Central Statistics Agency said Friday.

The economy, Southeast Asia's largest, grew 2.9% from the previous quarter, almost doubling from the first quarter's 1.5% expansion.

For the first half, economic output grew 6.5% from a year earlier, the agency said. The figures aren't seasonally adjusted.

The second-quarter performance was slightly stronger than what analysts had been expecting: Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had given a median forecast of 6.47% on-year growth and 2.82% on-quarter expansion.

"Things are still looking up for Indonesia, and we expect the economy to sustain its current pace of growth," OCBC economist Gundy Cahyadi said after the data release. He added that it is probable that full-year growth would exceed 6.5%.

"Certainly, the strength of the global economy is a risk to reckon with, but the prevailing capacity seen in the domestic economy is likely to form the underlying support for growth prospect going into 2012," Mr. Cahyadi said, referring to the country's strong consumption power and investment projects.

Mandiri Sekuritas economist Aldian Taloputra said his firm will raise its full-year growth forecast to 6.5% from 6.4%, citing continued strong investments and exports.

The statistics agency's deputy chairman, Slamet Sutomo, was even more bullish, predicting growth of 6.7% this year compared with 6.1% in 2010.

Economists said the robust growth would continue to attract investments, a key driver of the economy that according to the statistics agency accounted for 32% of GDP.
Investments rose 9.2% from a year earlier during the April-June period, picking up from 7.3% in the previous quarter, the agency said.

Funds have been flowing into Indonesia in recent years thanks to an improving political climate, as security concerns ebb and on government efforts to cut the red tape investors must face when opening businesses. Interest continues to be damped, however, by the country's chaotic infrastructure.

Exports, the other sector that propelled the economy in the second quarter, climbed 17.4% from a year earlier, accelerating from 12.3% growth in the first quarter.
Household consumption, the biggest component of the economy accounting for 54% of total output, grew a tad faster, rising 4.6% from a year earlier compared with 4.5% in the previous quarter.

Government spending, meantime, grew 4.5% from a year earlier after having risen 3% in the January-March period. Source: Wall Street Journal

NuEnergy strengthens relationship with Indonesian partner

Melbourne-based NuEnergy Capital on Friday reported that it had signed a joint operating agreement with Indonesian partner PT Petramina Hulu Energi Metana Sumatera, in an effort to strengthen the relationship and capabilities between the two organisations.

NuEnergy would start drilling on its existing coal-bed methane tenements during the current quarter, with the first drilling well expected to start in September, on the Maura Enim PSC.
The tenement is located in South Sumatra, and comprises a combined area of 1 861 km2 containing between 10 m and 40 m thick, low rank coal seams ranging in depth from 350 m to 1300 m.

The concessions appear robust for coal-bed methane development, said NuEnergy, adding that it contained thick sections of coal at optimal depths, and located close to existing oil and gas infrastructure.

NuEnergy was aiming to become a meaningful coal-bed methane producer in Indonesia, and plans to subject its acreage to a pilot hole exploration and appraisal drilling, as well as a pressurized coring programme to assess the reservoir characteristics of the coal beds, and the gas production attributes.

Should the pilot programme prove successful, NuEnergy was hoping to become one of the top-tier producers of coal-bed methane in Indonesia, within the next five years. Source: Miningweekly

Exxon will need $1.3 bln for full capacity at Cepu-BPMigas

* ExxonMobil says Cepu moving into full development phase

* U.S. major inks $746.3 mln engineering procurement deal
* ExxonMobil expected to award 4 other contracts before year-end

Exxon Mobil Corp and its partners must invest $1.3 billion at the giant Cepu block if it aims to achieve full output capacity, Indonesia's oil and gas watchdog said, as the U.S. energy major tries to expedite crude recovery.

The investment will be needed to build five construction facilities to enable the onshore oil block in Java, Indonesia's biggest oil find in over a decade, to reach peak production of 165,000 barrels per day (bpd), R. Priyono, chairman of BPMigas said in a statement on Friday.

Block operator ExxonMobil is selecting contractors to build facilities to raise production from current output of around 20,000 bpd.

Mobil Cepu Ltd, a unit of ExxonMobil operating the block, also signed a previously announced $746.3 million engineering procurement contract to a consortium of Samsung Engineering and Tripatra Engineers & Construction.

The contract is one of five needed to build full production capacity at the block.
Slow development of Cepu, after the first breakthrough was made in the Banyu Urip field in 2001, had previously brought ExxonMobil into dispute with Indonesian authorities, which threatened to revoke its operator status.

ExxonMobil and Pertamina inked a development deal in 2006, ending a four-year impasse as the state-owned oil firm yielded to the major's calls to be the lead operator, easing the way for the country to reverse its declining production.

Terry McPhail, President of Mobil Cepu Ltd, told reporters that when the firm first started working on the project, it had two development plans, with an initial target for 20,000 bpd.

"We wanted it to get on so we could get something done quickly," he said. "In the meantime, we have been working on for full field development which is the 165,000 bpd.
"That project is now at the point where the contract we sign today starts the clock and sends us heading towards the point that we can start peak production."

He added that a challenge for the project is to limit the impact on the people and communities living in the area, in eastern central Java.
"We had to acquire many thousands of tracks of land," he said.

"That means dealing with many land owners and negotiating individual deal with each one of them. That's a significant challenge," he said adding the project has now acquired enough land to enable them to proceed with the new phase of development towards gaining full capacity.

BPMigas said ExxonMobil and partners also expected to award four other contracts before the end of this year.
In April, ExxonMobil made a second discovery at the Cepu block, Kedung Keris.
Indonesia, a former OPEC member, had been expected to produce 970,000 bpd of oil this year. But BPMigas said in May realistic oil output would only be between 933,000 and 945,000 bpd in 2011.

Southeast Asia's largest economy reached its peak oil production in 1977 with production at 1.65 million bpd. Source: Reuters

3.   Indo Tambang Raya (ITMG) (BUY): (Target: Rp 48.300) (Close 05/08 Rp 48.300)
  • Entry (1) Rp 47.100, Entry (2) Rp 46.200, Cut loss point: Rp 45.200

Westside quits Indonesia

Brisbane-based WestSide Corporation now owns a drill rig after abandoning its coal bed methane venture with Indonesia’s Bumi Resources, the Australian company has announced.

WestSide chief executive Julie Beeby said the company had originally signed agreements with Bumi and its subsidiaries Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and Arutmin Indonesia to focus on projects in Kalimantan.

The company had already invested $2 million to date in the PT Seamgas Indonesia joint venture and had commissioned the rig Bumi acquired in 2008 for $4.2 million, she said.

"However, confirmation of WestSide's tenure and operatorship in these areas has not been forthcoming to enable us as the operator to progress from the Project Definition Study to an exploration campaign," she said.

The entry of new participants in production sharing contracts, including Pertamina, Energi Mega Persada and Tata had further diluted the company’s potential interest and made the joint venture more complicated, Beeby said.

The conclusion of the deal would give the chance to focus exclusively on its projects in the Bowen and Galilee basin and the Meridian SeamGas project, all in Queensland, she said.

"Investing to increase certified (proven and probable) reserves within our producing gas field, where we have the added benefit of immediate gas sales, offers a superior and timelier return on shareholders' funds than pursuing greenfield Indonesian prospects better suited to international energy majors," Beeby said.

It also gave WestSide unencumbered ownership of the Schramm TXD 180 drill rig, which it had been using at its Tilbrook, Mount Saint Martin, Paranui and Pretty Plains project areas for Meridian SeamGas since October 2009.

Beeby said the rig would be leased out at commercial rates when not required by WestSide. Bumi holds an 8.8% stake in the Australian company. Source: Upstream Online
