Coal Imports May Rise 78% to China, India, Drive Up Prices: Energy Markets

China and India may increase imports of coal by 78 percent to 337 million metric tons next year, further driving up prices from the highest in two years and diverting supplies from Europe to Asia.

China may buy 233 million tons of the fuel for its power plants next year, up from 143 million in 2010, Citigroup Inc. said in a Nov. 29 report. India faces a shortfall of 104 million tons in the 12 months ending March 2012, mjunction Services Ltd., a Kolkata-based commodity trader, said in a note on Dec. 6, citing Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

Asia’s two fastest-growing major economies are burning more of the fuel as economic expansion raises demand for electricity. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that China’s gross domestic product will next year expand 9.6 percent and India 8.4 percent. China is adding about 100 gigawatts of coal-fired generators this year, more than the total capacity of U.K., according to official data.

“All the indications are for increased demand in 2011,” Andrew Harrington, an analyst at Patersons Securities Ltd. in Sydney, said in a Dec. 9 interview. “China has become much more important especially because of the expectations that they will be unable to meet their own needs from domestic supply.”

China’s appetite for the commodity sent benchmark domestic prices at the port of Qinhuangdao to a two-year high of $129 a ton for the week ended Nov. 26, according to data from IHS McCloskey, a Petersfield, U.K.-based researcher.

Power-station fuel at the Australian port of Newcastle, the world’s biggest coal-export harbor, and South Africa’s Richards Bay climbed to the highest since October 2008, according to data compiled by IHS McCloskey on Bloomberg.

Supply ‘Constrained’
“The thermal-coal market will remain tight as strong demand from emerging markets, particularly China and India, drives record levels of imports,” said Daniel Brebner and Xiao Fu, London-based analysts at Deutsche Bank AG. “Supply is anticipated to be constrained in key producing regions such as China, Indonesia and Australia.”

Prices at Australia’s Newcastle port, a benchmark for Asia, rose to $109.80 a ton in the week ended Dec. 3, according to IHS McCloskey.

Export prices at Richards Bay Coal Terminal gained $3.80, or 3.7 percent, to an average $107.11 a ton in the week to Dec. 3, IHS McCloskey data showed. Delivered prices to Europe jumped 8.2 percent, the most since April 30, to $117.53 as China and India competed for South African supplies.

Indonesia Prices
The Indonesian government raised the reference price for coal sales in December by 8.3 percent from a month earlier, the steepest gain since it was introduced in February, the energy ministry said Dec. 8. The price benchmark for the fuel with a gross energy value of 6,322 kilocalories a kilogram increased to $103.41 a ton this month, according to the Directorate General of Coal and Minerals.

Coal use in Asia climbed 6.4 percent last year, more than a 0.8 percent increase in oil consumption, according to BP Plc.

Prices have also surged because of supply disruptions from heavy rain and flooding at mines in Indonesia, Colombia and Australia, while South Africa’s export growth has been crimped by a lack of rail capacity.

Xstrata Plc, the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal, has declared force majeure on some Australian shipments on Dec. 7 because of flooding of mines. PT Bumi Resources, Indonesia’s largest coal producer, revised down its coal output target by 6 percent this year as heavy rains hampered mining, Director Dileep Srivastava said Nov. 11.

Such disruptions have prompted South Africa and Colombia to divert supplies from traditional markets in Europe to higher- paying Asia.

South Africa’s Share
South Africa accounted for about 30 percent of India’s thermal coal imports this year, according to ministry data. Shipments in the first nine months of this year increased 16 percent to 15.2 million tons, while China’s purchases surged to 5.1 million tons until October compared with 1.52 million tons it imported for the entire 2009, according to mjunction Services, which is backed by Tata Steel Ltd. and Steel Authority of India Ltd., and Chinese customs data.

“Robust Chinese coal demand and import growth will continue throughout 2011,” Jeffrey Landsberg, president of New York-based Commodore Research & Consultancy, said Dec. 10 in an e-mailed response to questions. “China still has many decades left to develop. Only a fraction of the population, and really just the eastern part of the nation, has experienced profound growth. The rest of the country needs to develop as well.” Source: Bloomberg

Deutsche Bank Raises Coal Forecasts on Market Shortage

Deutsche Bank AG raised price forecasts for thermal coal by as much as 17 percent on expectations that a shortage of the fuel will widen over the next two years.

Export power-coal prices at Richards Bay, South Africa, a market benchmark, will average $118 a metric ton next year and $140 in 2012, Daniel Brebner, a London-based Deutsche Bank analyst, said in a report dated today. That’s up from previous estimates of $110 and $120 respectively, he said.

“Beyond winter, we expect that the thermal coal market will remain tight as strong demand from emerging markets, particularly China and India, drives record levels of imports,” Brebner said. “Supply is anticipated to be constrained in key producing regions such as China, Indonesia and Australia.”

Coal demand will outpace supply by 28 million tons in 2011 and by 30 million tons the year after, Brebner said. Richards Bay coal prices rose to $107.11 a ton last week, the highest in more than two years, according to data from IHS McCloskey. Prices rose as lower-than-usual temperatures and snowstorms in Europe push up demand for the fuel.

Paris will be as cold as minus 1 degree Celsius (30 degrees Fahrenheit) today, according to information on the World Meteorological Organization’s website. That’s compared with a December mean of 3.6 to 7.8 degrees Celsius from 1971-2000. Parts of Estonia are enduring the deepest snowfalls for this month since 1965, state broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhaeaeling reported on its website. Source: Bloomberg

UPDATE 1-Indonesia's Krakatau eyes coking coal supply deals

* Sees coking coal demand at 2.65 mln T by 2014
* In talks with Borneo, Marunda on long-term coal deal
* Considering option to buy stakes in Borneo, Marunda
* Sees 2011 steel output at 2.8 mln T vs 2 mln T in 2010

PT Krakatau Steel, Southeast Asia’s biggest steelmaker, is in talks with
miners PT Borneo Lumbung Energi and Marunda Graha Mineral to help
feed coking coal demand that it sees at 2.65 million a year by 2014.

This would be the first use of coking coal by Krakatau, which currently
uses natural gas to produce steel. Armed with $301 million from a listing
on the Jakarta stock exchange last month, it said it would consider taking
equity stakes to secure the coal supply.

“We are discussing with the two companies about security
of supply,” Fazwar Bujang, Krakatau’s president director, said on the
sidelines of a mining conference in Bali.

“One of the options...is to have a participating stake. If we have some
portion of shares, we will have better security of supply.”

Krakatau expects to consume 2.65 million tonnes of coking coal by 2014
to fuel steel mills for its own projects in Cilegon, West Java, as well as
its $6 billion joint venture project with South Korea’s POSCO.

The company expects to produce 2.8 million tonnes of steel next year,
including 2.2 million tonnes of hot-rolled coil, compare to an estimated
2 million tonnes this year.

Prices for coking coal could climb next year, amid growing demand for
steel as economic growth accelerates and the relative rarity of metallurgical
or coking coal, worrying steelmakers. Anglo-Australian miner BHP Billiton
plans to increase prices of coking coal for Japanese steelmakers by about
8 percent from the current quarter for the January-March period.

SOURCING IRON LOCALLY
Krakatau is also trying to source more iron ore locally and is in talks with
the local government in western Aceh province about developing iron ore.

Bujang said indications were that the mine deposit was of good quality
and sufficient quality, without giving details. Krakatau expects to produce
300,000 tonnes a year of sponge iron from 2011 from a project in southern
Kalimantan together with state miner PT Aneka Tambang.

“It will the first iron material that we source locally,” Bujang said, adding
that the sponge iron will be processed in southern Kalimantan and brought
to Cilegon to be melted down.

“We are also working on a long-term supply agreement with adjacent iron
ore miners in south Kalimantan,” he said.

Krakatau needs a total of 9.58 million tonnes of raw material in 2014 for
steel processing, including iron ore and pellets. It currently depends on
imported raw materials, mostly from Australia and Brazil, Bujang added.

Tin to Beat Other Metals as Deficit Widens on Demand, StanChart's Zhu Says

Tin is likely to outperform other base metals as demand growth outpaces production, widening a deficit through next year, according to an analyst with Standard Chartered Bank.

“Going forward, we expect global tin demand to continue to pick up from here,” Judy Zhu, a commodity analyst based in Shanghai, said at a seminar in Seoul. “We’d expect the tin market’s deficit to expand. We are bullish on tin and expect it to outperform the rest of base metals.”

Mine output will continue to be limited, with the production outlook for Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia remaining negative in the next 12 months, she said.

Stockpiles on the London Metal Exchange have fallen 42 percent this year, indicating a severe deficit, she said.

Tin for three-month delivery advanced 1.6 percent to $26,000 a metric ton today, bringing the gain this year to 53 percent, already the best of the LME metals.Source: Bloomberg

Bank Internasional Rises as Parent Gets Extension on Stake Sale

PT Bank Internasional Indonesia rose to the highest level in more than 10 years after parent company Malayan Banking Bhd. obtained a six-month extension to sell a stake in the unit, delaying the sale of a large block of shares.

Bank Internasional rose 25 percent to 1,010 at the 4 p.m. local-time close, the highest since April 2000. Maybank, as the parent company is known, is now required to sell the shares within six months to meet a government rule, Ahmad Fuad Rahmany, chairman of Indonesia’s capital market regulator, said today. The Malaysian bank was initially required to pare down its stake this year after its 2008 acquisition.

“The question is at what price will the shares be sold,” said Danny Eugene, an analyst at PT Mega Capital Indonesia. “People are speculating Maybank will sell at a high price.”

Maybank owns 95 percent of Bank Internasional after buying the majority stake from Temasek Holdings Pte and Kookmin Bank, which also triggered a takeover offer. Indonesia’s acquisition rules require Maybank to sell part of the stake back to the market if it ended up with more than 80 percent of the company.

Shares of Bank Internasional more than tripled this year, compared with a 49 percent gain in the Jakarta Composite index.Source: Bloomberg
