Commodities predictions for 2011: $100 oil, $1,500 gold

Commodity prices had a stellar 2010 and experts expect that momentum to carry over into this year, but at a more measured pace.

On average, investment strategists and money managers are predicting oil prices will rise 4% and gold will edge up just 1% by the end of 2011, according to an exclusive CNNMoney survey.

That may seem like a decent increase but consider where prices ended last year. Oil prices rose 15% and gold gained 30% in 2010. In fact, it seemed like gold was setting almost daily records during the second half of the year as the dollar remained under pressure and investors remained wary about the economic recovery.

But 2011 is a new year and the recovery looks like it's on track to keep chugging forward, so don't expect to see a repeat of those lofty gains this year.

Experts are a bit more bullish about oil than gold, with more than a third of the 32 survey respondents predicting $100-a-barrel crude prices by the end of 2011. Nearly half of those surveyed think gold will rise at least 7% to $1,500 an ounce by year end.

Much of the gains will be driven by demand from emerging markets like China and India, where rapidly growing economies are spurring on demand for certain commodities, said Sean Kraus, chief investment officer at CitizensTrust. He's calling for $102-per-barrel oil and $1,550-per-ounce gold this year.

"As emerging markets continue to grow and build more roads, highways and other infrastructure, the demand for oil and refined products will rise," Kraus said. "A middle-class is also forming in India and China, and as those individuals get wealthier, they will want some exposure to gold, not only for its investment value but because it is historically a significant part of their culture."

Despite that increasing demand, some experts are taking a much more cautious stance.
"We're going to see demand rise thanks to economic growth around the world, but I think we will be surprised by new oil supplies coming out of Iraq and Western Africa that will offset that," said Bel Air Investment Advisors portfolio manager Gary Flam. He thinks oil may spike above $100 during the first half of the year, but will finish off slightly lower at $85 per barrel.

And Flam sees gold prices dropping to about $1,250 per ounce by the end of 2011.

"Gold prices have climbed from below $300 to more than $1,400 per ounce, and have risen for 10 consecutive years. There's a need for a rest," Flam said. "I also think that we're starting to see the underpinnings of strong economic growth that is not boosted by the government, which will start to reduce the fear-based demand for gold."

Improving confidence in a sustainable economic recovery should lift the value of the dollar, and a stronger buck would keep commodity prices at bay since many of them are priced in dollars, Flam said.

However, about half of the investment experts surveyed think the dollar will decline during the year, and that may wind up being another supportive factor for oil and gold prices.

"We have a huge national budget deficit that we haven't seen much progress on, and the debt problem in states could also accelerate," said Avalon Partners chief investment officer Peter Cardillo, adding that both factors could weigh on the dollar, and push commodity prices higher -- as high as $1,800 for gold and $115 for oil in the first half the year. Morgan Stanley Set Target Price Borneo IDR 1,850

Morgan Stanley Research believes that PT Borneo Lumbung Energi & Metal TBK (BORN) is a beneficiary of tight supply-demand in the Asia/Pacific coking coal industry, given the superior quality of its coal and proximity to end markets.

While the lack of a track record introduces uncertainty regarding execution and volume growth, Morgan Stanley believes its forecasts are sufficiently conservative.  "Even so, we expect BORN to deliver a 2010-12 EBITDA CAGR of 94%. We thus set our price target at Rp 1,850 based on a 2011EV/EBITDA of 8.5x," said a company report.

This is at a premium to the 2011 industry average EV/EBITDA of 8.0x, reflecting Borneo’s strong earnings momentum as well as the upturn of the coking coal cycle. "Assuming no disruption to production or logistic and BORN achieves its sales volume, fair value could reach Rp2,150, we estimate."

Strong earnings momentum
Morgan Stanley's estimated 94% 2010-12 EBITDA CAGR to US$524 million by 2012 is driven by higher margins and growing production volume. While BORN’s production cost is higher than that of other coal companies in Morgan Stanley's coverage, its per tonne EBITDA margin is over US$80 per ton vs an average US$40 per ton for the brokerage's coverage companies. "Moreover, we expect a higher ASP, in line with rising coking prices until 2013."

By end-2011, Borneo is expected to ramp up production capacity at its Kohong block to 5 million tons vs 3.6 million tons this year. Morgan Stanley remains bullish on the outlook for coking coal and expect the seaborne market to remain tightly balanced.

Already Morgan Stanley is seeing spot coking prices rising on the back of disruption to the supply from Australia. "Over 2010-15, we project demand to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% vs. 6.5% in seaborne coking coal supply."

China remains the key demand driver (2010-15E CAGR of 5%), but we also see India emerging as an important coking coal customer (2010-15E CAGR of 16%).

Deutsche Beli 9.200 Lot Saham Borneo

First REIT acquires 2 Indonesian hospitals Lippo

SINGAPORE : Singapore's healthcare real estate investment trust First REIT on Friday said it has completed the acquisition of two Jakarta hospitals.

The two new Indonesian healthcare properties include the Mochtar Riady Comprehensive Cancer Centre as well as Siloam Hospitals Lippo Cikarang, a six-storey hospital that began operations in 2002.

With these acquisitions, First REIT said it has crossed a significant milestone as its assets under management have almost doubled to S$612.8 million as at December 31.

The trust's manager revealed that it aims to achieve a portfolio size of S$1 billion in two to three years.

Dr Ronnie Tan, chief executive of Bowsprit Capital Corporation, which is the manager of First REIT, said: "We believe that the healthcare sector in Indonesia holds vast potential for expansion as healthcare infrastructure continues to undergo extensive development."

Dr Tan added that having established First REIT's toehold in Indonesia, the trust will be able to grow its portfolio further across locations and medical specialisations in the country.

First REIT's sponsor, Lippo Karawaci, will be the master tenant of both the properties after completion.

Lippo Karawaci is Indonesia's largest listed property company by total assets, revenue and net profit.

Mr Ketut Budi Wijaya, president director of Lippo Karawaci, said: "Moving forward, Lippo Karawaci has plans to grow our healthcare business by having 25 hospitals in the next 5 years in order to meet domestic and global healthcare demands."

He added that this will, in turn, provide a very strong pipeline for First REIT as it has the first right of refusal to acquire these properties.

In addition, First REIT said that the acquisitions will raise the total gross floor area of its portfolio by 58.7 per cent, from 83,638 square metres to 132,696 square metres.

Meanwhile, the total number of hospital beds in relation to First REIT's Indonesia portfolio will increase by 43.8 per cent, from 537 to 772.

"Armed with an enlarged portfolio, we are well equipped to deliver long-term returns to our unit-holders by way of an improved distribution yield," added Dr Tan.

Meanwhile, the manager of First REIT revealed that based on projection year 2011, the trust's gearing level will stand at about 17 per cent, which is significantly lower than the regulatory limit of 35 per cent.

The manager of the trust added that this will provide it with sufficient headroom for future accretive acquisitions, and it will continue to look out for other healthcare-related assets in Asia to further raise its asset base. Source: Channel News Asia

1. E-Trading Securities

2. Erdikha Sekuritas

Rekomendasi HD Capital, 5 Januari 2011

Untuk Rabu, 5 Januari 2011, HD Capital merekomendasikan jual untuk saham Adaro Energy (ADRO) dan Bumi Resources (BUMI). Sedangkan terhadap saham Indocement Pratama (INTP) dan Bank Bukopin (BBKP) direkomendasikan beli.

SELL: (ADRO, BUMI), BUY:(INTP, BBKP)
  • IHSG close (04-01) 3.760.22 (+32.54/+0.87%) (Val.Rp.3.6T)
  • Support: 3.760-3.720, Resistance: 3.800-3.850

Stock picks:

1.    Adaro Energy (ADRO): (SELL) (Koreksi: Rp 2.700) (close 04/01 Rp 2.875)
  • Rekomendasi take profit terlebih dahulu karena saham ini mempunyai sifat untuk terkoreksi akibat keadaan jenuh beli pasca mencetak new high kemarin.
  • Ditakutkan produksi batubara Q4 2011 tidak akan mencapai target sehingga rekomen menunggu koreksi bila ingin akumulasi.
  • Exit: (1) Rp 2.900, Exit (2) Rp 2.975, Reverse posisi: Rp 3.050

2.   Indocement (INTP) (BUY): (Target: Rp 17.200) (Close 04/01 Rp 16.600)
  • Entry (1) Rp 16.400, (2) Rp 16.200, Cut loss point: Rp 15.500

3.   Bank Bukopin (BBKP) (BUY): (Target: Rp 680) (Close 04/01 Rp 650)
  • Saham perbankan pemain mikro UKM dengan valuasi PER/PBV 2011F termurah di sektornya (11x/1.5x versus sector perbankan average 16x/3.5x) seharusnya mulai adjust ke atas untuk pergerakan IHSG yang mendekati all time high.
  • Entry: (1) Rp 640, Entry: (2) Rp 620, Cut loss point: Rp 600

4.    Bumi Resources (BUMI): (SELL) (Target: Rp 3.050) (Close 04/01 Rp 3.250)
  • Exit: (1) Rp 3.400, Exit (2) Rp 3.500, Reverse posisi: Rp 3.600
