Indonesia cbank gov sees inflation slowing to 5 pct by end-2011

Bank Indonesia Governor Darmin Nasution said on Friday he expected annual inflation to slow to reach 5 percent by the end of 2011, within the central bank's target range of 4-6 percent.
"Looking at the figures and the trend, inflation will slow down and move to hit five percent at year-end," Nasution told reporters after June inflation data.

The annual consumer price index in June eased to a one-year low of 5.54 percent, the data showed earlier on Friday . The slowing inflation and Nasution's comments underline economists' expectations that Bank Indonesia may now be able to leave rates on hold at 6.75 percent all year. Source: Reuters

Indonesia's inflation slows further in June

Indonesia said Friday that inflation slowed further in June, easing pressure for the central bank to raise interest rates. The statistics agency said the consumer price index reached 5.54 percent, down from May's 5.98 percent.

The rate has slowed consistently over the past few months. May's figures was slightly down from April's 6.16 percent and well off March's 6.65 percent.

"We have a pretty good figure for June. This means the central bank won't have to rush to increase its interest rate," Bank National Indonesia economist Rosady Montol said.

The data comes as the central bank battles to keep prices down while also trying to cap huge inflows of foreign cash from investors seeking higher interest rates than in the West.
Bank Indonesia kept its key rate steady at 6.75 percent last month.

From a month earlier, the inflation rate was up 0.55 percent, compared with a 0.12 percent rise in May. The agency said prices for several food items, such as rice, rose unexpectedly.
Indonesia's annual core inflation, which excludes volatile food prices, reached 4.63 percent In June, slightly lower than 4.64 percent in May.

Indonesia says French firms to invest $2 bln in geothermal

Indonesia's investment chief Gita Wirjawan said on Friday that French firms have pledged to invest about $2 billion in geothermal power in the country, and will start looking at the prospects this year.

The pledge comes as executives at some French firms including energy major Total are accompanying France's Prime Minister Francois Fillon on a state visit to Jakarta on Friday.
With hundreds of active and extinct volcanoes, Indonesia holds an estimated 28,000 megawatts (MW) of geothermal energy potential, but only produces 1,189 MW in geothermal power. The country aims to produce another 3,967 MW by 2014.

The potential remains largely untapped so far because the high cost of geothermal energy makes the price of electricity generated expensive, and because of regulatory hurdles. Source: Reuters
