Indonesia to keep luring emerging market investors

Indonesia's stock market rallied to a record high this month, while net foreign ownership of the country's government debt is also at a record, as investors are attracted by strong growth and political stability.

Here are some questions and answers on why Indonesia is a favourite with emerging market investors.

WHY INDONESIA?
Indonesia showed resilience during the financial crisis. Its economy should expand around 6 percent next year, slower than China or India, but maintaining 2010's steady growth.
The economy is being driven by exports of resources such as palm oil and coal, for which global demand is picking up, plus a growing base of young consumers buying cars and mobile phones in the world's fourth most populous nation.

Its lack of reliance on exports, in contrast to Asian peers Malaysia and Taiwan, means investors can bet on a growth story that will be relatively decoupled from the slow growth in Europe and the United States.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was re-elected last year, boosting investor confidence. While progress on his promise to combat graft and on other institutional investor-friendly reforms has been limited, the police have containing the threat from militants while the government's debt levels have fallen.

Debt is seen at 27 percent of GDP this year compared with about 80 percent in 2001, according to data from Bank Danamon.

That's led to credit rating upgrades: Fitch in January rated Indonesia one notch below the coveted investment grade, which would put it on a par with BRIC nations and allow many institutional investors who avoid junk bonds to invest. Many economists and the government see investment grade in 2011.

Total returns from owning Indonesian bonds in dollar terms have been a mouthwatering 20 percent after 40 percent returns last year, while the stock market has climbed over 40 percent this year, after last year's 87 percent rally. And a strengthening rupiah , up over 4 percent, boosts local currency assets.

WHAT ARE INVESTORS BUYING?
Investors are buying banks and consumer stocks. Top vehicle seller PT Astra International , cigarette firm PT Gudang Garam and noodle maker PT Indofood Sukses Makmur have all outperformed the index.

PT Bank Negara Indonesia is the top performing major bank, up over 100 percent this year. Its valuation is still reasonable at a price-to-book of 2.2, versus 4.9 for PT Bank Central Asia, the largest lender by value.

Demand for new listings is expected to stay strong in a relatively small market. With firms looking to take advantage of the rally, 2011 will see more offerings such as state carrier Garuda and U.S. miner Newmont's local unit.

Indonesian stocks saw net foreign buying of $2.3 billion this year up to Dec 14, more than double the last year's net inflows of $936 million, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The central bank's short-term debt paper, or SBIs, has also been an investor favourite, paying a juicy 6 percent, but the central bank in recent months has stopped issuing the lowest one- and three-month tenors and imposed a 28-day holding period, cutting liquidity and pushing investors towards longer tenors or government debt, and this trend is likely to continue.

While bond yields have risen in recent weeks mirroring a broad rise across Asia as some investors took profits into the year-end, net foreign holdings have risen to a record 196 trillion rupiah, or above 30 percent of all tradeable debt, suggesting much of the money invested is staying put.

In a sea change from recent years, foreigners have been big buyers of longer-term debt, snapping up 10 to 20 year papers as low interest rates and ample liquidity encouraged offshore buyers to add duration.

Ten-year bonds offer a yield of 7.74 percent, 0.6 percentage points above equivalent Mexican debt and 3.8 percentage points over Thai bonds .

Foreign direct investment is also picking up and is expected to grow slightly next year to over $14 billion, led by North Asian firms. There are also tentative signs more Western firms are willing to take the risk, after many have been put off for years by corruption, poor infrastructure and red tape.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
For stocks, valuations are looking expensive, particularly for banks, and the index's PE ratio is at 16.4, above Bangkok's 12.9, Hong Kong's 14.1 and Turkey's 9.6.

Corporate governance is another risk. Regulators earlier this year queried the financial reports of top coal miner Bumi Resources and other firms controlled by the powerful Bakrie family. Bumi's stock slid around 30 percent by mid-year though has since recovered.

For bond investors, there is still the risk that the central bank will misjudge inflation, historically the Achilles heel. Inflation accelerated to above the central bank's upper target of 6 percent last month, and could pick up further in coming months on higher food and electricity prices.

The central bank sees rate hikes as a policy of last resort as it fears attracting greater capital inflows, but most economists expect a rate hike by the second quarter.

If earlier or steeper rate hikes look more likely, this could cut demand for dated bonds and hurt the rupiah. Another factor that could inhibit fresh inflows next year is if U.S. Treasury yields continued to rise at a sharp pace, which would diminish the relative allure of these bonds given spreads over Treasuries would be at tighter levels. Indonesia Stocks to Rise as Inflation Risk Overstated,Panin Says

Indonesia stocks, Asia’s best performer among major markets this year, will extend their rally as concerns about accelerating inflation are overstated and potential interest-rate increases won’t slow the economy, according to PT Panin Sekuritas, the nation’s best performing fund over the past five years.

Investors should buy PT Gudang Garam and PT Indofood Sukses Makmur as consumption growth will likely hold up, boosting demand for cigarettes and food products, David Sondakh, a Jakarta-based analyst at Panin, said in an interview today.Source: Bloomberg

Market Update untuk sementara tidak aktif

Pembaca setia blog toko saham

Terima kasih atas perhatiannya.

Rubber Exports From Indonesia May Grow 6%-8% Next Year

Natural rubber shipments from Indonesia, the largest grower after Thailand, may rise 6 percent to 8 percent next year from an estimated 2.4 million metric tons on strong demand from India and China, an industry group said.

Output of the commodity used to make tires and gloves may gain as much as 8 percent next year to 2.6 million tons to 2.7 million tons as a rainy season that may last until the first quarter of next year is forecast to have a limited impact to production, Asril Sutan Amir, chairman of the Rubber Association of Indonesia, said.

Carmakers led by Ford Motor Co. are building plants in India, Asia’s second-fastest growing major economy, where car sales are projected by the government to double to 3 million by 2015. Bridgestone Corp. and its Indian rivals are spending $3 billion on new capacity to meet demand forecast by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association to expand 10 percent to 106 million tires in the year to March 31.

In the second quarter “the weather would be dry, if it’s normal, our output will also be normal,” Suharto Honggokusumo, executive director of the association, said at the same event.

A longer than normal rainy season this year, caused by the La Nina weather phenomenon, has hurt production of palm oil, cocoa, tin and coal in Indonesia.Source: Bloomberg

Indonesia November Refined Tin Exports Increase 2.5%

Refined shipments of refined tin from Indonesia, the world’s largest exporter, expanded 2.5 percent in November from a month earlier, the country’s trade ministry said.

Exports rose to 8,986.38 tons in November from 8,766.9 tons in October, Djunaedi, head of mining exports at the Trade Ministry, said by phone in Jakarta today. Shipments during the January-to-November period were 84,764.67, according to a faxed statement from the ministry.

That’s lower than the 90,779.02 tons exported during the same period in 2009, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Increased supplies may curb a rally that has seen prices of the metal used for soldering and packaging rise 6 percent since last month, driven by concern that heavy rains in Indonesia would lower production and shrink stockpiles amid rising demand.

In November, the metal was shipped to 8 countries, including Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Most of the shipments, 7,165.32 tons or 80 percent of the total, went to Singapore. Tin for three-month delivery on the London Metal Exchange rose 0.3 percent to $25,900 a ton at 1:54 p.m. Jakarta time.Source: Bloomberg

Rekomendasi Beberapa Sekuritas, 16 Desember 2010

Untuk Kamis, 16 Desember 2010, tiga sekuritas ternama memberikan rekomendasi, berikut saham-saham pilihan yang patut dicermatin.

1. E-Trading Securities

Rekomendasi HD Capital, 16 Desember 2010

Untuk perdagangan Kamis, 16 Desember 2010, HD Capital merekomendasikan empat saham pilihan, yakni Telekomunikasi Indonesia (TLKM), Astra International (ASII), Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGAS), Bank Mandiri (BMRI).

BUY: (TLKM, ASII,PGAS, BMRI)
  • IHSG close (15-12) 3.658.31 (-31.35/-0.85%) (Val.Rp.4.1T)
  • Support:3.620-3.575, Resistance: 3.720-3.770-3.820

Stock picks:

1.    Telekomunikasi Indonesia (TLKM): (BUY) (Target: Rp 8.150) (close 15/12 Rp 7.850)
  • Entry: (1) Rp 7.800, Entry (2) Rp 7.600, Cut loss point: Rp 7.400

2.   Astra International (ASII) (BUY): (Target: Rp 54.950) (Close 15/12 Rp 52.800)
  • Entry (1) Rp 51.750, (2) Rp 50.650, Cut loss point: Rp 49.550

3.   Perusahaan Gas Indonesia (PGAS) (BUY): (Target: Rp 4.600) (close 15/12 Rp 4.300)
  • Entry: (1) Rp 4.250, Entry: (2) Rp.4.150, Cut loss point: Rp.4.000

4.    Bank Mandiri (BMRI): (BUY) (Target: Rp 6.850) (Close 13/12 Rp 6.600)
  • Entry: (1) Rp 6.400, Entry (2) Rp 6.300, Cut loss point: Rp 6.200

Mandiri Investasi, the asset management arm of Indonesia's Bank Mandiri , said on Wednesday it plans to sell mutual funds in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as part of a plan to get 20 percent of assets from outside its home base.

Mandiri Investasi has obtained a license to sell investment products in the city-state and is in the process of registering several funds with the Monetary Authority of Singapore, President-Director Abiprayanto Riyanto said at a media briefing in Singapore.

Indonesia's Telkom says in talks to acquire Cambodia's CamGSM

* Telkom seeks majority stake in top Cambodia mobile firm
* CamGSM valued at about $1 billion - source
* Telkom expects to complete deal by Q1 2011
* Would be first major overseas acquisition by Telkom

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia , Indonesia's biggest telecommunications company, said on Wednesday it is in talks to acquire a majority stake in Cambodia's largest mobile operator CamGSM in a deal that could be worth over $500 million.

The planned acquisition, which values CamGSM at about $1 billion according to a source with knowledge of the deal, would be Telkom's first major acquisition overseas after a failed bid to acquire Iran Telecommunication Company last year.

"I hope that the process of acquisition will be completed by the first quarter next year," Tanri Abeng, Telkom's chief commissioner, told Reuters.

"We've made it through the bidding process and we're now in talks to get financial details done, but we are surely going to take a majority stake," Abeng said, declining to give any financial details.

CamGSM, established in 1996 between Millicom Group and Cambodia's Royal Group, is the largest mobile operator in Cambodia through its Mobitel and Cellcard brands.

Mobitel's CEO David Spriggs declined to comment on the deal.

Millicom sold its 58.4 percent stake in the firm last year to Royal Group for $346 million in cash.

Telkom's plan to acquire a majority stake in CamGSM is part of the company's strategy this year to find acquisition opportunities in the region as the once-buoyant Indonesian market is starting to mature.Source: Reuters

TV5 owner to invest in Indon broadcast firm

ABC Development Corp., which runs TV5, is buying into Indosiar, a publicly-listed national television station in Indonesia majority owned by Anthoni Salim, chairman of First Pacific Co. Ltd.

“We will partner with Indosiar. This will be an investment by TV5,” said president Ray Espinosa at a press briefing yesterday.

He did not disclose further details but said this was going to take place after TV5 has commenced its international business, which means expanding its reach as far as Europe, North America, Middle East and Japan.

“For our global business, we will form an international company via a joint venture with PLDT [Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.]. This expands our reach in the international side. We plan to launch this in the first quarter of next year. Also, TV5 will be present in the region via an investment in Indosiar,” explained Espinosa.

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. The media investment of TV5 is sure to fuel the organization’s aim to be multimedia leader in Asia. “This will allow us to work closely with Indosiar. This is in line with our goal to be a multimedia company,” added Espinosa.

Earlier, PLDT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said he and Anthoni Salim, chairman of the phone giant’s parent firm First Pacific, were in discussion to forge a partnership involving the broadcast firms.

Pangilinan said both firm at an exchange of the networks’ talents. After all, Pangilinan said, there are synergies between the two TV outfits.

Indosiar’s parent company, PT Indosiar Karya Media Tbk, is a member company of the Salim Group conglomerate. PLDT, meanwhile, is owned by First Pacific and Japan’s NTT Communications and NTT DoCoMo.

“I have talked to him. I told him if he wants we can just put the two together so we can share each others’ talents. Our journalists are the best in the region. It’s very easy to learn Bahasa Indonesia. We have been talking about it and I told him that we are interested to help you….Maybe put the two stations together or MediaQuest to invest there,” Pangilinan had said.

Espinosa added that TV5 is expected to post between P850 million and P900 million in revenues this year. The bulk of the projected revenues will mainly come advertising revenues of TV5 programs. “In two years, we are probably going to be Number 1 and by middle of next year we would have already covered 95% of national urban areas,” added Espinosa.

MediaQuest is the media holding company of the PLDT retirement fund.
The broadcasting firm, which is more known as TV5, is confident it would hit the numbers by the end of the year, Espinosa told reporters.

The company official said TV5 is spending P7 billion in capital expenditure for broadcast transmission, network and operations, inclusive of new studios and offices this year.

MediaQuest, he added, will continue to invest in expanding TV5 to be able to achieve its target of being the Number 1 broadcasting network in the country in the next 3 years.
“We will be expanding, same as the reach and strength of the two leading broadcasting networks, by rolling out in all areas where the two networks are present,” he said.

MediaQuest holds a 100% stake in TV5, the television network of former PLDT chairman Antonio “TonyBoy” Cojuangco, and Primedia Inc., the broadcasting firm’s block airtimer. The acquisition cost MediaQuest about P5 billion. Source: ABS-CBNNews

BUY: (ADRO, BBNI, NIKL, SMGR)

Coal Imports May Rise 78% to China, India, Drive Up Prices: Energy Markets

China and India may increase imports of coal by 78 percent to 337 million metric tons next year, further driving up prices from the highest in two years and diverting supplies from Europe to Asia.

China may buy 233 million tons of the fuel for its power plants next year, up from 143 million in 2010, Citigroup Inc. said in a Nov. 29 report. India faces a shortfall of 104 million tons in the 12 months ending March 2012, mjunction Services Ltd., a Kolkata-based commodity trader, said in a note on Dec. 6, citing Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

Asia’s two fastest-growing major economies are burning more of the fuel as economic expansion raises demand for electricity. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that China’s gross domestic product will next year expand 9.6 percent and India 8.4 percent. China is adding about 100 gigawatts of coal-fired generators this year, more than the total capacity of U.K., according to official data.

“All the indications are for increased demand in 2011,” Andrew Harrington, an analyst at Patersons Securities Ltd. in Sydney, said in a Dec. 9 interview. “China has become much more important especially because of the expectations that they will be unable to meet their own needs from domestic supply.”

China’s appetite for the commodity sent benchmark domestic prices at the port of Qinhuangdao to a two-year high of $129 a ton for the week ended Nov. 26, according to data from IHS McCloskey, a Petersfield, U.K.-based researcher.

Power-station fuel at the Australian port of Newcastle, the world’s biggest coal-export harbor, and South Africa’s Richards Bay climbed to the highest since October 2008, according to data compiled by IHS McCloskey on Bloomberg.

Supply ‘Constrained’
“The thermal-coal market will remain tight as strong demand from emerging markets, particularly China and India, drives record levels of imports,” said Daniel Brebner and Xiao Fu, London-based analysts at Deutsche Bank AG. “Supply is anticipated to be constrained in key producing regions such as China, Indonesia and Australia.”

Prices at Australia’s Newcastle port, a benchmark for Asia, rose to $109.80 a ton in the week ended Dec. 3, according to IHS McCloskey.

Export prices at Richards Bay Coal Terminal gained $3.80, or 3.7 percent, to an average $107.11 a ton in the week to Dec. 3, IHS McCloskey data showed. Delivered prices to Europe jumped 8.2 percent, the most since April 30, to $117.53 as China and India competed for South African supplies.

Indonesia Prices
The Indonesian government raised the reference price for coal sales in December by 8.3 percent from a month earlier, the steepest gain since it was introduced in February, the energy ministry said Dec. 8. The price benchmark for the fuel with a gross energy value of 6,322 kilocalories a kilogram increased to $103.41 a ton this month, according to the Directorate General of Coal and Minerals.

Coal use in Asia climbed 6.4 percent last year, more than a 0.8 percent increase in oil consumption, according to BP Plc.

Prices have also surged because of supply disruptions from heavy rain and flooding at mines in Indonesia, Colombia and Australia, while South Africa’s export growth has been crimped by a lack of rail capacity.

Xstrata Plc, the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal, has declared force majeure on some Australian shipments on Dec. 7 because of flooding of mines. PT Bumi Resources, Indonesia’s largest coal producer, revised down its coal output target by 6 percent this year as heavy rains hampered mining, Director Dileep Srivastava said Nov. 11.

Such disruptions have prompted South Africa and Colombia to divert supplies from traditional markets in Europe to higher- paying Asia.

South Africa’s Share
South Africa accounted for about 30 percent of India’s thermal coal imports this year, according to ministry data. Shipments in the first nine months of this year increased 16 percent to 15.2 million tons, while China’s purchases surged to 5.1 million tons until October compared with 1.52 million tons it imported for the entire 2009, according to mjunction Services, which is backed by Tata Steel Ltd. and Steel Authority of India Ltd., and Chinese customs data.

“Robust Chinese coal demand and import growth will continue throughout 2011,” Jeffrey Landsberg, president of New York-based Commodore Research & Consultancy, said Dec. 10 in an e-mailed response to questions. “China still has many decades left to develop. Only a fraction of the population, and really just the eastern part of the nation, has experienced profound growth. The rest of the country needs to develop as well.” Source: Bloomberg
